SDCC Preview: Great Panels to Hit Up

We are one week out until nerd summer camp aka SDCC is on!  Besides the fantastic Hall H and Ballroom 20 offerings, there are some great panels to hit up that don’t involve sleeping on the sidewalk the night before.  We thought we’d give you a little rundown of some cool stuff happening this year.

Thursday July 21, 2016 10:00am – 11:00am

Incorporate your love of sci-fi, fantasy, superheroes, and games to begin your fitness adventure. Despite age-old nerd stereotypes, fitness belongs to all of us, including those of us in the geek community. Andrew Deutsch (Nerdstrong Gym founder), David Nett (Nerdstrong Gym partner), Christy Black (Nerdstrong Gym partner), Andrew Seely (Nerdstrong Gym partner), and Blair Herter (Nerdstrong Gym partner, Attack of the Show) discuss body image and confidence in a geek world, their fitness journeys, and the simple ways you can mix your fandom, passions, and gamification into a new, leveled-up life.

Pasquale Piro (Raising Fankids, 8th grade teacher) moderates a panel discussing techniques and experiences that help kids grow up nerdy without the negative connotation. The panel includes Alissa Piro (middle school teacher, mom), Frankie Desmond (Jack of All Trades costumes, dad), Mike Conrad (father of two), and Maia Nilsson (high school student).

Crossing over into every genre, Steampunk has transformed some of our favorite Marvel characters into some of the steamiest superheroes and villains in the galaxy. Celebrating the incredible artists who create such wonderful fan art and the cosplayers who make the costumes a reality, come enjoy a walk on the wild side with everyone from Ant-Man and Deadpool to Spider-man and Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters as they are re-imagined in Steampunk style! Panelists include C. J. DeAngeles, Diana Given, Christine Quimbo, and a surprise artist guest. Moderated by Gaslight Gathering Steampunk Convention’s director of programming, Anastasia Hunter.

Perfect your cosplay by having great makeup to go with it. This panel covers beauty makeup, appliance application, special fx makeup, sculpting, molding, casting, and wig styling. Dawn Banks (Makeup By Siryn, Batgirl Spoiled lead makeup designer), Ashley Troub (The Nerdist, winning look SDCC Her Universe fashion show), Kelton Ching (SDCC 2014 Apocalypse makeup demo, Blizzcon 2015 4th place winner), Keaghlan Ashley (Face Off, makeup design onSeverus Snape and the Marauders), and Chrissy Lynn (Super Power Beat Down’s Darth Maul, League of Steam’s White Wolf) will answer your questions about makeup to match your costuming and cosplay, including tips and tools of the trade. Moderated by cosplayer Mac Beauvais (Monstrous Makeup Manuals 1 & 2 model, actress in The Gloaming).

The Business of Geek Fashion

Do you ever wonder how the latest Star Wars fashion collection was made or why companies are hosting fashion shows featuring your favorite fandoms? This panel will offer an inside look at the business of geek fashion, examining the major changes that took place in the industry over the last year and what they means for the future. Moderated by Lisa Granshaw, panelists Ed Labay (Hot Topic), Ashley Eckstein (Her Universe), Jon Schindehette (ThinkGeek Solutions), and Sara Scargall (WeLoveFine) will discuss the process behind creating pop culture apparel and accessories, how geek fashion is expanding into new areas, how the industry has evolved over the years, and recent geek fashion trends. There will be time left for attendees to voice their opinions and ask their questions about geek fashion.
Comic Book Law School

For the final installment in this year’s Law School series, a panel of legal experts shed light on some of the more complex issues facing creators and businesses and touch on compelling issues popping up on the law and how they apply to comics and the pop-culture scene. Attorney Michael Lovitz, author ofThe Trademark and Copyright Book comic book, is joined by Professor Marc Greenberg and attorneys Howard Hogan, David Lizerbram, and Larry Zerner to provide practical advice concerning some of the more advanced issues facing trademark and copyright owners, including: Legal issues for fan fiction and fan art; fan films (a la Star Trek) and fair use; homage, swipe, or transformation; whether reproducing an artist’s published work is fair use or foul play; and how the new FCC “Set Box Top” proposal could be kryptonite for the creative community. Please note: The Comic Book Law School seminars are designed to provide relevant information and insights to practicing attorneys, as well as practical tips to creators and other professionals who may wish to attend.
